Clean up to improve appearance

[edit]

Article(s): en:Paul Martin (illustrator) - reachable via the link in reference 201.

Request

Hello. I am the original uploader of this image. I still have the original magazine. I would like to avoid any alterations that would require a new file name. Please tweak this image to make it more presentable. Notice how there is a bluish tint or something in the lower-third left section, for instance. The background should be more naturally uniform. I'd appreciate just some touch-ups to improve the overall quality without creating a new file name. That might mean improving the focus and coloring and removing any glare area. I attempted to improve the image with my basic image editor on May 2, 2025 (under "File history"). However, I seemed to give it an artificial glitter appearance instead. Update. I increased size and tried again w/o success on 7/5.

Graphist opinion(s)
Hi JimPercy, I strongly recommend rephotographing if that’s possible. Ideally use a bright sunny room during the day, but set the magazine as far away from the windows and direct sunlight as possible. Turn indoor lights off (if using natural light); we don’t want mixed lighting sources that have differing colours. Zoom your lens in, step back and set your shutter speed to 1/100 or higher. Take the photo without cropping in the outside edge of the magazine, and we can crop digitally. HTGS (talk) 18:50, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. If possible, I would ask to "improve" one of three images. I know they are old and not very good, but for this not so small city in Italy here in commons there are no views of Pianezza. Thank you in advance. --MrKeefeJohn (talk) 20:31, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@MrKeefeJohn, I've improved the 2nd image. If you can request the high-res image from the archive, that would be great. I can do a lot more with the full scan. JayCubby (talk) 16:34, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@JayCubby: Thank you. Is it a possible to upload the improved image like a new, "indipendent" file? About your suggestion, it's a good idea, but I'm not sure to have time to do it :-( MrKeefeJohn (talk) 06:29, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, can someone take a look at this file: Portrait of William James, Bishop of Durham, 1606-1617 signed by William James. A cropped version of the file for the signature would be great to add to the Category:William James (bishop) and William James. Thank you so much. Lotje (talk) 16:17, 30 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
I'm not a graphist, but that's not William James' signature, it's a printer's mark indicating they redrew the oil painting for a printing plate. You also didn't even link to the version with the signature, which isn't on Commons. -Nard (Hablemonos) (Let's talk) 01:31, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Remove unwanted motorcycle shadow (Agadir Souk Al Had)

[edit]

Article(s): Agadir, Souk El Had

Request
Please remove the **unwanted motorcycle shadow** visible on the **right-hand side foreground pavement** of the image.
The edit should preserve the natural stone texture and lighting consistency of the ground, without altering people, architecture, or perspective.
No cropping is requested; only a clean retouch to eliminate the shadow artifact.
This image is intended for encyclopedic use, so the result should remain realistic and neutral.
Thank you. --Flaspec (talk) 12:11, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Massive stacking errors visible - do you have the original files? Grunpfnul (talk) 12:31, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for checking. I’m not the original uploader of the image, so unfortunately I don’t have access to the original source files.
For reference, the exact location corresponding to the affected foreground area can be found in **Google Maps (satellite imagery)** at the following coordinates (Street View also available):
30.411268, -9.579653
This should allow precise inspection of the pavement texture and lighting conditions. Hopefully it helps with a realistic reconstruction. --Flaspec (talk) 13:43, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Passed more 10 days, why nothing respond me? ~2026-10016-6 (talk) 21:04, 5 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Remember these requests are all done by volunteers and it has been the holiday season. Maybe no one was interested in such images for work you can easily do yourself, or they were too busy. There are no deadlines here so please be patient. You can easily do this with the crop tool that you find in your preferences when you have a registered account. Check out the details given 5 posts below this one. Ww2censor (talk) 12:08, 6 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Also note, mate unless these images are truly yours you shouldn't be requesting to crop or manipulate them without the user's permission. If you want to do so please create an account and you can crop and manipulate them yourself by creating a new file. Lots of users do it that way, including myself --LuvsMG481 (talk) 05:47, 18 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Request
The file contains two photos stacked vertically. Please crop only the upper photo. I would like a portrait crop of the second person from the left: a young woman wearing glasses and a uniform - it’s Evelyn Einstein. Head-and-shoulders portrait preferred. --Υ.Γ. (talk) 18:54, 23 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Easily done. But @Υ.Γ., could you rescan this and upload the TIFF? Flatbed scanners produce great results, and I can perform color correction, etc, on the TIFF better. JayCubby (talk) 19:07, 23 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Dear JayCubby, I can’t create a TIFF scan right now. I’ll try to do that as soon as possible. Much appreciated!--Υ.Γ. (talk) 19:20, 23 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. JayCubby (talk) 19:24, 23 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime I uploaded a cropped and retouched version. Just cropping would result in a very small photo, as shown in the file history. If you prefer the small "head-and-shoulders portrait" without the uniform, you or we can easily reset this by one click in the file history. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 08:15, 13 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Please improve woman's image and evaluate couple's image and house image

[edit]

Article(s): en:Charles and Bettie Birthright, en:Charles and Bettie Birthright House

Request
I’m using the first and third image in two Charles and Betty Birthright articles. The original woman's image was dark and I brightened it. I was wondering if her image could be improved. I am including the original and my edit. The image of the couple, Charles and Betty, can that also be improved? And the last image of the couple in front of their historic home, I have not used it in the house article, because it is such a poor quality image. Can that be improved enough to use on their historic house Wiki page? Thank you for any help.

MauraWen (talk) 19:35, 27 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

MauraWen, the last image is interpolated. Can you provide a link to where you found it, if it is accessible online? I want to see if I can pull a better copy. If it is not accessible online, never mind.
I used a Fourier transform to reduce some of the halftone, but you will get a far better result if you scan the newspapers at a high resolution, using an overhead or flatbed scanner. Cell phones are really quite lousy at scanning. JayCubby (talk) 20:39, 27 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
JayCubby Newspapers.com Memphis Press-Scimitar, sept 7, 1978: url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/800655461/?match=1. I access the newspapers online, so I am not sure how I could scan a physical copy.
The old house image was on page 6 and her image was on page 1. I used the photos of Betti and the couple that I took with my iphone of a historic display at a Missouri welcome center. that image is better than the newspaper's image. Thanks for your advice! MauraWen (talk) 21:00, 27 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
MauraWen, thanks. Given the papers you photographed are on display, scanning them will be a bit trickier. Is what I did to the first an improvement? Anachronist, since you have access to newspapers.com (currently waitlisted), can you see if a better copy can be had for the last image? JayCubby (talk) 21:40, 27 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
JayCubby Thanks! It looks like you improved the lightened image of Bettie. Yes, it looks better. I did not see any changes to the Betty and Charles Image (3). Did you think that looked ok, and did not need any adjustments? MauraWen (talk) 22:21, 27 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@MauraWen, 2nd one done (I reduced the noise somewhat with a FFT, then curved the lighting). If you can get the Marston Welcome Center to rescan the photos, then I will be able to get a much better result. JayCubby (talk) 23:02, 27 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It seems my newspapers.com access expired in October without me knowing about it. I have requested a renewal. ~Anachronist (talk) 23:06, 27 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
JayCubby Thx for the 2nd edit. I won't be able to get a scan from the Welcome Center. I don't know who created the display, It was probably commissioned by the state of Missouri and the images and content were probably taken from several sources: libraries, newspapers, Dunklin County museum, private collections, etc. There is no staff at the welcome center. I could look into the county historical society, but I’m not sure they would provide a new scan, as museums often have restrictions on reproducing images from their collections, even public domain era photos. Ascaso mugshot

[edit]

Article(s): Francisco Ascaso

Hey all, I've found several different scans of this mugshot, but unfortunately, each one of them has its own share of problems. The current version is the highest-resolution version, but it has some hard reflective light towards the top, is missing the left side of the photograph, has the number "462" written on the photograph and shows a thumb holding the photograph in place. The previous version shows the full left side of the photograph, but also has reflected light and markings, and the edge of the photograph in the bottom right. Could someone here help retouch the image and coverup the artefacts from scanning/photographing? Thanks in advance. --Grnrchst (talk) 16:38, 28 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I took several photographs of artifacts (paintings, maps, documents) at a museum, and I would love some help processing them so they look as close to flat, high-quality archival scans as possible.
Could someone please help correct the perspective to flatten them out, crop away the backgrounds/frames, and adjust the white balance and brightness to remove the warm museum lighting? They were shot with a Canon EOS REBEL SL1 kit lens, so some also need lens correction to fix the noticeable barrel distortion (bulge). Yes, I would say so. I was not thinking about a sophisticated solution, a simple blurring would also be sufficient, I think. But of course I support a nicer solution. Bencemac (talk) 20:57, 4 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Magazine covers

[edit]

Article(s): en:Paul Martin (illustrator) - reachable via the link in reference 91.

Hello. I am the original uploader of the Liberty magazine cover and the unique preliminary sketch. I would like the yellowish tainted cover in #1 to look more presentable or be cleaned up. #2 is the exact same mag cover. Notice how both have that same (faint) circular indentation mark in the lowest middle, under the doll's cloth. Is it possible for image #2 (same mag) to overlay only the cover of image #1, while maintaining the same size dimensions? (#1 shows the correct size difference between the cover and sketch, since I originally photographed them together on top of a table.) Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 13:16, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
JimPercy It is very much possible, but you could make the job a bunch easier. Do you have access to a flatbed or overhead scanner? If not, most libraries have them. If you scan both at the same DPI, the scale will line up without needing to transform the images. Perspective would not need to be corrected also. JayCubby (talk) 13:34, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I photographed them together in Feb. 2025. I have a scanner, but the magazine cover alone (10.5 x 15.5") would not fit into the surface area. Maybe a better route would be just even slightly improving the image quality of the yellowish-colored cover in picture no. 1. JimPercy (talk) 14:07, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
OK. @JimPercy, ✓ Done, though you may need to refresh the file page for changes to show. If you can use an overhead or large flatbed scanner, ping me and I will redo it. JayCubby (talk) 14:17, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'll ask about that sometime at the local library. Yep, much better. I guess the preliminary sketch could be touched up (or brightened) a spec if helpful, though that's not important. Oh, the change showed up right away w/o reloading. ~~~ JimPercy (talk) 15:00, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@JimPercy, I brightened the right cover and sharpened the left one (perspective correction reduces sharpness). JayCubby (talk) 15:11, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again. JimPercy (talk) 15:41, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
