Speedy decision for a deletion request

[edit]

Hello, in my opinion Commons:Deletion requests/File:Musical instruments used in Strauss's Second Waltz.webm can be decided by speedy deletion, see my answer there. It needs, though, some cleanup on the file page itself, as well. — Speravir01:34, 1 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The English caption of the picture of the day has a typo. It should be Poplar hawk-moth (or even better - Poplar hawkmoth), and not Poplar hawk-mot, but can only be edited by an administrator. Loopy30 (talk) 11:44, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

User:Εὐθυμένης makes many incorrect deletion tags

[edit]

Hello admins, I found (User:Εὐθυμένης) tagged my file for (No source) and it was deleted although I add {{own}} template to source section when I uploaded it (own work), As is clear from the file's page this is a false report. I review the user contributions and found a lot of false reports like: 1 - 2 -3 - 4 - 5 -6 all this files has (own work) template! so where are the "missing source"?! , also I found in his talk page a lot of users complaint about his/her false tags, I don't know if these errors are due to the use of tools or what, but these false reports certainly cause many files to be deleted incorrectly, and therefore admins should intervene to prevent this. Thank you. Ibrahim.ID 14:42, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

File:Ih-portal.png was tagged for not having a source, which was incorrect. It was deleted for not having a license, which was also incorrect. Εὐθυμένης has also tagged File:Άγιος Γερμανός.jpg for not having a source, although it has a source. Ping @Εὐθυμένης: . Thuresson (talk) 18:51, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Thuresson: Yes, it says that it's "own work". However, where is the metadata section (the code that is present in there matches, as per what another admin told me at some point in the past, a code usually associated with files coming/downloaded from face book) that usually certifies that? Also, please note the obvious (?) difference both in terms of metadata and size of the file with those uploaded by the same user before and after this one. 🏺ⲈⲨⲐⲨⲘⲈⲚⲎⲊ🏛️ ⲱⲑⲏⲥⲁⲧⲉ 20:35, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
PS. Also, with the same occasion, I'd also like to say that usually and most of the time it is more common for questions or disagreements to be posted on an active user's talk page instead of (repetitive?) appreciation messages. After all, this is only supposed to be part of the usual things to do, tagging files with problems, changing categories, requesting renamings, uploading files etc. I don't think that there are many users out there expecting (?) to be thanked regularly on their talk page for a correct tagging of a file with issues, a renaming request that got accepted, an uploaded photo of theirs that looks really nice etc. But then again, that is just my mere opinion. 😕 🏺ⲈⲨⲐⲨⲘⲈⲚⲎⲊ🏛️ ⲱⲑⲏⲥⲁⲧⲉ 20:43, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Users upload photos without metadata for all sorts of reasons, if something is out of the ordinary it would be better to either tag the image as a copyright violation or nominate the file for deletion. Thuresson (talk) 21:02, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Thuresson: If face book is really the source of the previously mentionned file, then, it's almost impossible to trace it back since most pages (especially if we're talking about individual user profiles) are blocked for "outsiders" as long as they don't log in. 😕 PS. I guess, in such cases, maybe the precautionary principle could be possibly applied. 🏺ⲈⲨⲐⲨⲘⲈⲚⲎⲊ🏛️ ⲱⲑⲏⲥⲁⲧⲉ 21:24, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Based on my review of these "false" reports by Εὐθυμένης, I think of them as "mostly right" but incompletely explained. Half of the DRs I linked above have resulted in deletion, the other half are still ongoing. I also consider files that came via Facebook as suspect, but I start DRs for the ones I find, with explanations.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:05, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jeff G. I think you missed the point here. We are not discussing the issue of suspicious files or copyvio, but rather the use of an "incorrect template". If the user has doubts, he should use (COM:DR) not {{No source since}} template. This template is for files that have no source. If half of the files were deleted, this does not mean that it was the right thing to do. Perhaps the admin deleted them by mistake and did not notice and that happen with my file (the file was restored BTW).
Εὐθυμένης has already confirmed here that he meant something other than the purpose of the template, he didn't discussed "the metadata issue" with other users and didn't provide it as reason, he just tagged it and many of them was deleted which this is an important problem, and I think we should guide him to the right path and not support his wrong actions. Ibrahim.ID 16:12, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Ibrahim.ID: Yes, that template is for true "no source" situations, but many use it for "there may be something wrong here, but I'm too lazy to be specific and file a DR" and need to be stopped. I started and participated in the mentioned DRs with specific facts. Thank you for discussing.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:40, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Please delete some Unsplash files

[edit]

Hi admins, can we delete the following two files

Both the files in question were uploaded onto Unsplash past the June 5th 2017 cutoff date which under their new licence would mean these files are incompatible for Wikimedia Commons. I don't want then for us to get into trouble for hosting non-free content. LuvsMG481 (talk) 15:12, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, I'm not really sure about that part Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 15:51, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm no expert. However, if you read the licencing at the bottom it specifies that anything published after June 5th 2017 cannot be hosted. We will wait for an admin because I'm not sure whether its in breach of Commons policies LuvsMG481 (talk) 16:05, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Actually, @Mehuntu, you know what? Perhaps let's have all the templates moved into your userspace so you can work on them

i agree. retain this template but not in this namespace until completed. its propose is to provide support for templates using cc sa regional Mehuntu (talk) 08:10, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
move all the pages to user space and let admins and template editor edit and finalise it annd move without redirect. i meant to create in user space Mehuntu (talk) 08:14, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I see now, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/sa/1.0/deed.en is a 1.0 license that is retired and not recommended. A retired and not recommended 2.0 version of that is being promoted by the user at Template:Cc-sa-2.0-jp for Japan based on this deed, but no 3.0 version, and none is offered for the US. Creative Commons does not offer it in their main list here or offer to choose one in their chooser.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:19, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Protect POTY 2025 from vandalism

[edit]

Dear administrators,

POTY 2025 just started. CentralNotice banners are placed on all wikis with a link to POTY which usually drives huge trafic on POTY pages. Every year, POTY gets repeatedly vandalized including the contest main page (see this history for examples) until they got protected. Here are some of the pages to protect :

And all galleries accessible from the gallery page.

Also please read carefully this topic to see how it should be protected to avoid blocking the ending of stage 1 and starting of stage 2.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Kind regards,

-- Giles Laurent (talk) 00:27, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

For the pages listed on this page, protected with following settings. The rest, I will proceed with same settings after lunch (in UTC, after 4AM).

}
— regards, Revi 02:39, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
And some side idea after reading that last year thread: Maybe just utilize template-editor userrights and protection so we can just set expiry to 'never' while still letting non-sysop POTY committee to edit. — regards, Revi 02:44, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
All galleries are now protected with same expiry (full protection expiring 2026-04-19T01:00:00Z, indef move protection), and final result page is protected until 2026-05-02T01:00:00Z. — regards, Revi 04:10, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Revi C.: assuming I understand your comment correctly, is there a reason you did not mark this as "done"? - Jmabel ! talk 06:24, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Since Round 2 will need another round of new protections after R1 processing… (I've set the edit=sysop to expire shortly after R1 ends) But yeah, they can simply open a new section when R2 is coming. Or they can simply ask me on my talk page :) Either way, feel free to mark stuff when I seemingly have forgotten to do so. (I'll probably make adjustment when the assumption is wrong :D) — regards, Revi 06:52, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for the protection! Is there a way to give an exemption to ZI Jony and Ingenuity to let them the possibility to edit the pages? Right now ZI Jony can't recategorize pictures anymore because he can't edit the json pages anymore. If I understand correctly for last year the problem was solved by protecting the links through Titleblacklist and by giving at the same time an exemption to Ingenuity through an AbuseFilter : see here for more details. Could you please grant Ingenuity and ZI Jony such an exemption this year as well? Thank you very much in advance! -- Giles Laurent (talk) 10:22, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Protection doesn’t work that way. #c-Revi C.-20260406024400-Revi C.-20260406023900 is the only route we can let someone non-sysop edit, or them going through RfA. — regards, Revi 00:11, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Protection doesn't work that way but AbuseFilter does (eventually combined with Titleblacklist) and Ingenuity was still able to edit pages in POTY 2024 so it would be a great to have everything accessible to Ingenuity for quick fixes (like this one). Thank you for your understanding -- Giles Laurent (talk) 11:36, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I know all of that, but I consider abusefilter as a last resort when protection can do the job just fine — because abusefilter has “condition limit”, and for the sake of Occam's razor, easier solution is always better solution. For me, cost of remembering to maintain TBL and Abusefilter v. template-editor protection with adding someone as template-editor → I consider protection much better solution.
Of course, you can ask other admins to do that for you, but I am not going to be the one doing that. — regards, Revi 12:55, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
In this case would it please be possible to give template-editor right to Ingenuity at least on a temporary basis? Thank you for your understanding -- Giles Laurent (talk) 13:04, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Giles Laurent, that's possible, @Ingenuity have to request at COM:RFR. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 14:21, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Now that the pages are protected, could an admin add the following JSON to each of these three pages: Commons:Picture of the Year/2025/Gallery/Mammals/data.json, Commons:Picture of the Year/2025/Gallery/All/data.json, and Commons:Picture of the Year/2025/Gallery/June/data.json? After editing, please visit each gallery (minus /data.json from the title) to make sure it still loads properly.

I would like to request a multilingual mass message for POTY 2025 R1. The message is in Commons:Picture of the Year/2025/Message, and targets are Commons:Picture of the Year/2025/Message/Targets. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 14:44, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@ZI Jony, title is not defined :) — regards, Revi 05:03, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Revi C., please use the default title used by admin every year "Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!". Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 05:07, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Noted and  Doing… In the future, it’s probably better to have that section name embedded in the message so it could be sent as translated. (I guess…) Also, I am going to use discretion and add ~~~~ at the end of the section. — regards, Revi 05:15, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

A new user, who started from the translation and made this edit: it is said here that to vote in the POTY you should have an income in 1 US dollar. The most dangerous vandalism is not very visible. Анастасия Львоваru/en 15:47, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Well, literally all their contribution should be deleted (another example). Анастасия Львоваru/en 15:51, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think it was an honest mistake (possibly machine translation). See Translations:Commons:Picture of the Year/2025/5/en. The $1 there is a formal parameter. - Jmabel ! talk 18:22, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Would someone with decent Russian please reach out to this user and explain the situation and, in particular, that for something that will appear in a user interface they should not use machine translation to translate from a language that they do not understand at least reasonably well. - Jmabel ! talk 18:28, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Lvova: would you be willing to take that on? - Jmabel ! talk 18:29, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Okay, if you believe that it is a honest mistake, I'll try. Анастасия Львоваru/en 18:52, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Lvova: thanks. Run the English through Google Translate (as I did after guessing that was what they did and posting here), and you'll see it does exactly this. - Jmabel ! talk 22:25, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Close request

[edit]

Could an admin take a look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Millipede Otterness.jpg and assess whether it's worth leaving open any longer? The only comment posted so far is my nomination statement. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:45, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

There's a backlog of even older DRs. If it's not urgent just leave it until someone works through the backlog. The admin noticeboard would get too cluttered if we'd report every DR that is still open. (And comments can come in even several months after the DR was opened — I've in fact commented on another January 28 DR just 2 days ago.) Nakonana (talk) 08:20, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
✓ Done. --Túrelio (talk) 08:24, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Please block for vandalism (adding of inexisting and non-pertinent categories over all files of Boccioni's, and overcategorization of existing files). This is a well-known spammer about Lombardy, I can't remeber original username, but I have already reported him in Meta for another topic (so-called "Filippinism") and he had already a long history of cross-wiki spam, blocks, evasions and spam. --Sailko (talk) 17:29, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • ✓ Done indef-blocked. I can't quickly tell whether this disruptive user is malicious or just incompetent, but it really doesn't matter. Adding useless (mostly nonexistent) categories to images. Clearly unlikely to make a positive contribution to the project. - Jmabel ! talk 19:38, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Admin available by email?

[edit]

Is there an admin that is willing to be available by email? I have an issue I need addressed but am worried about posting publicly due to the Streisand effect. I have tried to contact the info email and have received no response after multiple days. Any admin willing to be emailed would be greatly appreciated! Zackmann08 (talk) 01:22, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Zackmann08: I'll be available by email for the next several hours. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:07, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Unarchiving village pump discussion

[edit]

The discussion at Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Fop Bangladesh has been archived to Commons:Village_pump/Copyright/Archive/2026/03#FoP in Bangladesh.

I am unsure whether I am permitted to unarchive it or what the proper procedure would be. The discussion does not appear to have been formally closed. As the proposal is quite extensive, it requires significant time for contributors to review and respond. A small number of users have shown interest to comment who have not finished reading and scrutinize it.

It's important to note that, I didn't push anyone to comment in favour. I have reached out to relevent users and requested for comment.

If any admin would unarchive it, that would be greatly appreciated.Tausheef Hassan Auntu ✉Talk? 06:04, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Tausheef Hassan this is certainly not the first time a discussion is archived without reaching a conclusion or formal closure. If you think reviving the discussion will lead to it being formally closed with a conclusion, go ahead. If there is no participation again and it gets archived, then I would suggest you to drop it. Just leave a small text at the end of the thread that you've unarchived it to see if it can reach a conclusion. Don't forget to sign it so that the 7 days timer is reset. And don't forget to remove it from the archive page when doing so. Shaan SenguptaTalk 15:35, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Shaan Sengupta: Do I just edit the wikitext and move it from the archive and add it to the village pump directly in source editor? Or is there a formal way to do it? Tausheef Hassan Auntu ✉Talk? 16:08, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Tausheef Hassan, the thread was already unarchived by @MS Sakib. Though he didn't remove it from the archive page. I have done so now. I have also stopped the bot from archiving it until 18:14, 19 April 2026 (UTC). If there is no active discussion, it'll be archived again. So try to reach a conclusion by then. But in case there is an active discussion, we can always push the date. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 18:18, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Rename requests - target already exists

[edit]

Hello everyone, per this discussion on COM:VPP Phabricator task T421373 is resolved by @Nemoralis and delete-redirect right has been granted to filemovers. Therefore I propose a minor change in {{Rename}}.
Currently if someone makes a rename request for a filename to move to one of its single revision redirects or any other exisiting name, the message reads

The specified target file exists. File movers will be unable to rename this file. An admin is required or choose another name. Use {{duplicate|(File name)}} if the file is exactly the same.

Now I don't think it can be automatically determined if the proposed name is indeed a single revision redirect. So we can just add a few words and it might be enough. Maybe something like

The specified target already exists. File movers will be unable to rename this file if the proposed name is not a single revision redirect. An admin is required in such a case or choose another name. Use {{duplicate|(File name)}} if the file is exactly the same.

This is my suggestion. Someone may choose better words. Its just that I feel the message needs to reflect the change that has happened. I think a lot of filemovers have no idea about this change bcoz they were never notified (atleast not me). I know bcoz I participated in that discussion. Maybe a mass message to every filemover notifying this change will also help. And also adding info about delete-redirect at COM:FM just like it has about suppressredirect. Shaan SenguptaTalk 09:05, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Alternate possible wording: "The specified target already exists. File movers will still be able to rename this file if the proposed name is a single-revision redirect, but otherwise this move will require an admin, or you can choose another name. Please use {{duplicate|(File name)}} if the target name already contains exactly the same file." Not sure if that's better, just laying out options. - Jmabel ! talk 20:28, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel, I tried not to add too many words as it would become lengthy. What about "The specified target already exists. File movers can rename this file only if the proposed name is a single-revision redirect; otherwise, this move will require an admin, or you can choose another name. Use {{duplicate|(File name)}} if both files are exactly the same." This has about 46 fewer characters than your suggested version and 6 more than my initial version. Fine with me. - Jmabel ! talk 23:09, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Rename request

[edit]

I uploaded 23 images today, which can be seen in Category:United Kingdom photographs taken on 2026-04-09.

Through a moment's inattention, I have screwed up a mass rename, creating redirects from the wanted names, that I cannot now overwrite.

Instead of "West Midlands Metro Digbeth extension", all 23 file names should begin "West Midlands Metro Eastside extension". Can someone fix that, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:36, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing, if I understand correctly, you want File:West Midlands Metro Digbeth extension - 2026-04 -09- Andy Mabbett - 02.jpg to become File:West Midlands Metro Eastside extension - 2026-04 -09- Andy Mabbett - 02.jpg which has now become redirect bcoz of the wrong moves. If this is the case, you can certainly switch the names yourself, file movers recently got delete-redirect for single revision redirect. And it can only be done while moving the page. (See the thread above). I just moved File:West Midlands Metro Digbeth extension - 2026-04 -09- Andy Mabbett - 01.jpg to File:West Midlands Metro Eastside extension - 2026-04 -09- Andy Mabbett - 01.jpg without retaining the previous name. Plz tell me if you need to retain the previous name and if I have done it the way you wanted. Then I'll do the rest or maybe you can ny yourself. Shaan SenguptaTalk 15:27, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
The "MassRename tool gives an error: "An error occurred while trying to do the requested action. [...] The name you have specified exists. Choose a new name, please. Error @line194"
I have now tried manually and can rename the files, but not in bulk.
I'll do them manually, but thank you anyway. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:51, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
